TAGAYTAY CITY, Philippines—(UPDATE) Information technology students from
AMA Computer College East Rizal won this year's Cisco skills competition that
pitted top student teams in a challenge that tested their knowledge in basic
networking. It was the first time that the school participated in the annual
Cisco Skills Competition, where six teams from different universities in the
country qualified as finalists. The winners are Rusette Cu, Levi Edrian Santos, Vincent Floyd Rosacay and
Delmer Galinato. They were coached by Natalia Estelon.
In an interview after the awarding of prizes, the winners unanimously
declared that they had not expected to win."But we're happy," Santos said in Filipino.
"I believe we got lucky," added Floyd.
The competition involves a written and a practical networking skills
challenge that required student teams to solve network problems under time
pressure. The students were given around 45 minutes to figure out a way how to
"configure" Cisco routers to address a specific networking problem. The AMA students got the highest score in the practical networking skills
challenge. The second prize went to the Mapua Institute of Technology in Manila,
while the third place went to another AMA Computer College in Davao."It's a task-oriented, problem solving competition," said Geraldo Talisic,
president of the Cisco Core Council of the Philippines, an organization
overseeing the implementation of Cisco Networking Academy program in the
Philippines. It is mainly composed of teachers representing different academies throughout
the Philippines. The competition also aims to validate the "effectiveness" of the
Cisco Networking, added Talisic. This year's other finalists were System Plus College Foundation, University
of Cebu, Mapua Institute of Technology School of IT in Makati, and AMA Computer
College Davao.
